DIYpsi wrap up!

wow! what a weekend at the corner brewery in ypsi last weekend for DIYpsi! a ton of snow fell on saturday, and folks still drove hours from ferndale and ann arbor to shop handmade and sip some tasty brews. it snowed even more on sunday and even more folks came out! thank you so much, you brave souls, for trekking out to the corner brewery. inside the corner the mood was indeed festive and merry!

it was amazing hanging out with my crafty pals for one last weekend this year. the last show of the year is always bittersweet. i like to think of it as a big holiday party with amazing artists. the organizers, marcy (all things grow), sherri (the library lab), and cre (tin angry men), did an amazing job organizing this fun and cozy show. there was shopping, vegan brats, dancing, laughing, and more shopping.

thank you so much to dang argyle supporters! 2013 was a fun year, and i look forward to seeing you next year in all things dang.

DUCF wrap-up

another detroit urban craft fair has come and gone, and again i'm at a loss for words. this year was the 8th year for the event, and there was record breaking attendance- over 4500 shoppers were there! that is amazing. several vendors were selling out of things, aisles were packed with people, and so many smiles and high-fives were given among everyone there. the masonic temple is the perfect backdrop for this event. DUCF is truly a magical experience and i am humbled and proud and thankful that little old dang argyle was able to participate in michigan's largest indie craft fair. i always tear up a few times during the weekend. sigh.

thank you so much to the wonderful ladies at handmade detroit for putting on yet another amazing craft fair! these gals know the score! thank you so much to all the rad shoppers, and thank you michigan for having such a fabulous craft community. i've been making and participating in shows since 2006 and i'm still in awe at how super everyone is. my heart is filled will joy and and i'm so happy to be a part of it all.

i sadly took only a few crappy photos, but anne at indie lovely took a billion nice photos! so here are a few of hers that capture the day:

yes, that's a craft-a-way camp shirt you see! on day two of DUCF ten of the campers that were also vendors wore our shirts- it was so fun! and great when folks asked what it was and how they could participate.

next up: DIYpsi indie art fair in ypsilanti on december 14-15. 40 vendors will be selling the finest in handmade wares for this holiday season. tis the season to shop local and buy handmade! it's nearly everyone's last show of the season and it's always a blast!

see you there!

literary knits

what a great idea! literary knits is a book full of knitting ideas and patterns inspired by classic literature. the book features 30 projects inspired by characters from novels such as pride and prejudice, moby dick, the catcher in the rye, the chronicles of narnia, and the great gatsby. the book includes patterns suited for men, women and children's wear.

what novel would inspire you to make related knitwear?!

craft-a-way camp

last weekend was the first ever craft-a-way camp. to put it one way: it was EPIC. craft-a-way camp is the brainchild of amy and ethan cronkite, of small craft. they put together a wonderful weekend full of fun craft workshops, recreation time, crafts, a vegan potluck, a nature walk, craft coctails, crafts, swimming, campfire songs and stories, and crafting, lots of crafting. it was such a magical weekend.

twenty eager campers, all fans of crafting, met in the wilderness and crafted their hearts out for two days straight. one of us even crafted until we puked. (that may or may not have been me. i may or may not have been awarded the craft-til-you-puke award, a beautiful necklace made by glass action.)

rustic cabin / giant craft tent / coolers
(you know crafters can go anywhere without 6ft tables and bunting!)

the official schedule

andy sell of the foraging florist is super knowledgeable of all things planty. he lead us on an informative nature walk as we foraged for items to make arrangements with. we then made floral frogs to keep our foraged items in check.

block printing and screen printing workshops were lead by marcy davy of all things grow
saturday night we had a GIANT vegan potluck. how is this the only photo i took? i guess i was too busy eating.

we painted mother nature necklaces with courtney of courtney fischer jewelry

we had some happy camper fun with painted rocks and wrapped twigs with val willer of make-out goods.

we also made hand sewn camper cuffs with karen lepage of one girl circus leading the way.

craft-a-way camp swag! what up!

the small craft @ pot & box

while normally the small craft hosts events at the trumbullplex in detroit, they've taken their act on the road this winter, and yesterday they hosted a meet-up at pot & box in ann arbor. it was such a lovely space for a kick-ass crafty gathering! amy and ethan cronkite of small craft provided coffee, tea and yummy vegan cookies, cellar door soap co. sold delicious soaps, while i lead a skillshare on how to turn old paperback books into pretty book sculptures! paperback trees and dangling diamonds were the most popular shapes made by guests. it's a fairly simple craft once you learn the tricks, and it's quite addicting, so hopefully i've created a few folding addicts. we had a great crowd with some of my favorite crafty faces in attendance, and i had boat-loads of fun. (get it? boat? small craft?)

thank you so much to those who came out, and to small craft for organizing these monthly gatherings, and for allowing me to share a skill this wintery month.

next up: the small craft will be at woodward avenue brewery in ferndale, where handleber will be leading a skillshare, and glass action will be the featured pop-up shop. i'm in!

more book talk: belle isle to 8 mile

the linn siblings have written a wonderful guide to the city of detroit. whether you're just passing through or have lived in the area your whole life, there is something in this book for you. you may know emily and andy linn from their detroit shops city bird and nest and have seen them at local art and craft fairs. i feel like i met andy and emily way back in the beginning of dang argyle days, and i am so happy to have done so! their belle isle to 8 mile book is an inspiration to the creator and wanderer in all of us.

small craft!

february's edition of small craft is headed to ann arbor for a visit! small craft will be setting up at the adorable pot & box on saturday, february 9. there will be a pop-up shop featuring cellar door soap co. from 2-6pm, and a skillshare lead by me that goes from 3-6pm. there will also be coffee and vegan baked goodies to fill your tummy. read more about this adventure here.

for the skillshare we'll be making book sculptures! i have a slew of paperbacks waiting to be folded into beauties. once i started folding up books, i simply could not stop. it's super fun, addicting, and the end result is wonderful. my favorites are the diamond shapes that hang! the event is free to attend, and supplies will be provided; though i highly recommend you bring a glue gun if you have one.

don't fear repurposing books; these books were most likely to collect dust and never be read again, and if that's the case, they may as well go on collecting dust as amazing art sculptures instead.

see you there!

book time | extra yarn

extra yarn by mac barnett is one of my favorite picture books as of late. it has the potential of winning a caldecott thanks to jon klassen's beautiful illustrations. the story features annabelle who comes across a box containing some yarn. but a magical thing happens! she knits and knits and the yarn never seems to run out. so she knits sweaters for dogs, and people, and trees, and cars, and soon the entire monochromatic town is awash in color thanks to her handiwork. the greedy archduke decides to steal her magic box. how will she get out of that pickle? you'll have to read it to find out. it's a great read-aloud for the little ones, and sure to be at your local library!

gertie's in town!

gertie hirsch's blog for better sewing is one of the most popular sewing blogs on the internet. an avid seamstress, her clothing designs are vintage inspired and truly fabulous. if you're into kitsch and sewing, her blog's a must read. and you should check out her new book: gertie's new book for better sewing: a modern guide to couture-style sewing using basic vintage techniques.

michigan crafters, you've got a treat coming up soon. the new york-based gertie will be in town and you'll have a chance to meet her! she'll be visiting the ann arbor district library for a free event on sunday, january 27, from 2-3:30pm. she'll be talking about her book and her blog, and there will be a book signing with books for sale. sounds like fun, right? she's making the trip out, so should you. i am working that day and won't get to attend, so you need to go and let me know how it goes!

happy new year!

a happy new year to all you dangsters! i hope everyone had a marvelous holiday season and is settling into this time we call winter. the end of a year brings many best of the year lists, which are always fun to read. it's a great way for me to find some top books, movies, or CDs i have may have missed out on throughout the year.

the end of the year is also when i take a look at the list of books i've read over the year. last year i didn't read as much as i normally do, so when nicole posted about fiftyfifty.me i had to sign up! it's a challenge to read 50 new books and watch 50 new movies in 2013. it's a great motivator to read more. i'm super excited that my dang argyle partner in business crime cortney is on board! that's right, BOTH dang girls are participating.  i've been manzing the blog for a while now, and it'll be nice having her log back in again to work on her list. feel free to check out our lists throughout the year, make suggestions, find possible read-alikes, tell us what movies we must watch or we'll die. i'm looking forward to consuming mass quantities! will you join us?
