DIYpsi recap

this past weekend was the 5th annual DIYpsi indie art fair holiday version -- and holy smokes, what a show! it was at a new venue this year, the riverside arts center in ypsi, and it worked out really well!

i spent the week between DUCF and DIYpsi sewing like a mad woman, and it was not for naught. you all cleaned me out! the show was hopping all weekend and i had a blast chillin' upstairs with sloe gin fizz, alisa bobzien design and the detroit grooming company. i loved relaxing at the well attended after-party, and the fun after-after-party. it's so wonderful to hang out with this close knit group of fabulous makers. i'm forever grateful for all that i have gained in creating this little handmade business known as dang argyle, and the people are a huge part of that. DIYpsi is often the last show of the year for many artists, so there is an extra special vibe of happy relief and thinking - oh yeah, christmas is almost here, where's my tree at and what handmade gifts am i giving everyone?

some of my small relations visited the fair, and my 7 year old niece collected business cards at the show, like kids like to do. she made a collage of them and included some comments and showed it at school for show n' tell. isn't that the coolest?! she is full of sunshine and magic, that girl.

i want to thank you all for a wonderful season, and i look forward to seeing what 2015 brings.

detroit urban craft fair recap!

sigh. well, the 9th annual detroit urban craft fair came and went. 8,000 shoppers came through the beautiful masonic temple in detroit. 8,000! up from last year's 5,000. that's amazing!!! it is simply wonderful to think of all that DUCF and handmade detroit has done for this crafty community over the past decade. this show is the largest and longest-running indie craft fair in michigan. the firsts DUCF in 2006 was the first show dang argyle ever did, and i remember it like it was yesterday. so i sit here today, after the gangbusters amazing sell-out DUCF #9 and my heart just wants to explode. how did we get here? and where are we going?

awesome things: dancing in the aisles and behind the tables thanks to the rad jams by DJ dave lawson, the vegan food and chocolate shakes from shimmy shack, the beautiful amazing giant masonic temple, the super volunteers who took care of us, amazing table neighbors, friends who visited, the wacky class photo by doug coombe, and SO much more. how did we fit such magic into two days in detroit?

leading up to this show... sewing a ton of stuff, drinking too much coffee, surrounded by a messy house, watching lots of the wire, eating chinese food, making up songs about sewing to the tune of baby got back... well, doing all that as DUCF gets closer, the emotions swell up in anticipation of the giant crafty reunion that is DUCF and i tear up way to many times. this community of artists (and shoppers, too!) bowls me over every year and i am so humbled and happy to be a part of it. thank you!!

handmade marketplace

this is the 2014 second edition of kari chapin's the handmade marketplace. (the first edition was published in 2010 and this new edition is a great update.) the book is an amazing resource for anyone embarking on a new craft business or wanting to beef up their current one. the book discusses everything you want to know and learn about running your own crafty business.

it talks about branding and logos, how to pick the right name, how/when/where to market via blogs, websites, social media, etc., how to set up a blog or website, taxes, the deal with wholesale and brick & mortar stores, how to get into craft fairs, and more. i really like that the book isn't all about "just make stuff and create an etsy shop." it is really insightful and laid out beautifully.

the book is in a wonderfully easy-to-follow format and is chock full of useful information. even if you think you have it all together, it's nice to get some feedback to make sure you're on point and doing what you can to craft a great business! i know that next up for dang argyle after the holiday craft fair rush is to ditch our out-of-date website and create a new logo! both are much needed and will really add some freshness to our 9 year old business!

pumpkin chili

the fall colors have peaked, the leaves are dancing on the ground begging to be raked. and after a good leaf raking experience is a perfect time to make this delicious pumpkin chili from thug kitchen. all vegan and made with beans, pumpkin and delicious spices it was full of flavor! i tweaked the spices a bit, because while i love using recipes i always tend to add my own twist to it. i topped it with green onion and cilantro and ate with a side of mini garlic toasts. hello fall!

small craft in detroit

the amazing and awesome small craft, amy and ethan cronkite, have been hosting pop-up shops and skillshares in detroit and beyond. (i hosted a book sculpture workshop in ann arbor last winter.) they are also the fine folks who brought us craft-a-way camp!

well, this saturday is the last of the monthly skillshare workshops in its current format! it's a painting class by aimee of enamor and will be at the trumbullplex in detroit. there will be treats, crafting, smiling faces, and more. you might even catch glimpse of the 2 cronkite kiddos running around being crafty and imaginative.

i look forward to seeing what's next from small craft! it sounds like they have some fun up their sleeves with more crafty days for us ahead.

a great day for peaks freaks

well, the internet has exploded, so anyone who is interested in this fact has probably heard by now... twin peaks will be back in 2016! nine episodes will be filmed in 2015 and the show will air on showtime in early 2016. the show will take place 25 years later (the last episode aired in june 1991.) it is yet to be announced who, if any, of the original characters/ actors will return for this continuation of the series (edit: agent cooper/kyle maclachlan is IN!)

holy smokes! i'm very excited. i'm also afraid. i mean, it's a cult phenomenon. i watched this show on tv when it originally aired in the early 90s. it was big deal! will it be ruined by being revisited? what's keeping me excited is that mark frost and david lynch are writing it all and lynch will be directing all episodes. they will get to tell their story. (and we all know what happened to their ideas in season 2....) ah! this is crazy news.

let's not forget about those cute pouches i made.

or that time i hosted a twin peaks party.

the sewing party is coming!

on november 8th the magical world of sewing has its own day! the first ever sewing party takes place that day, and participants will be able to "attend" 30 online classes featuring sewing and crafting from a variety of teachers. and the classes will be viewable for 90 days after the event! so you really get the bang for your buck.

the talented nicole of sloe gin fizz worked on the graphics for the event (look at that sewing machine playing a record!!!!), and i've been chatting with her during the production process, so i'm excited to see what the online event will look like the day of the sewing party.

check out this charming video for a little teaser...
and then go register. or buy a tshirt.

summer in the fall in the mitten

much of last weekend was simply a lovely michigan weather weekend. i spent part of it climbing the dunes at warren dunes state park! a first for me, and soooooo beautiful.

i also visited some pigs at the LEGO store...

and some cute chickens at the spring valley nature preserve!

falling into fall

fall in michigan is apparently here early! chilly weekends in this beautiful state are perfect for fall craft fairs and fall festivals. this past weekend i got my fill.
i spent some time at the ever amazing DIY street fair in ferndale. where i shopped the fabulous DIY vendors, ate vegan mac and cheese, ate a hero from hero or villain's food truck, and drank delicious blake's hard cider. flannel mouth! and i learned that cider with jabanero is pretty good.

theater bizarre is always a sight wherever they go.

i have been meaning to hit up northville winery for some hard cider - it's one of my faves and i was excited to visit the tasting room. they serve flights in muffin tins! it did not disappoint. except for the bees. and the crazy busy cider mill next to it, that we totally avoided.

the city of northville also had the victorian festival happening, complete with lumberjack theme. um, we didn't see much evidence of either... but we did happen upon a desolate and odd little carnival, so we rode some rides and laughed our butts off!

HA HO HE. we could not stop laughing. it was a very interesting carnie adventure.

and that's how you do a crisp goodbye summer kind of weekend in the mitten state.

DIYpsi recap!

corner brewery in ypsilanti set the scene for another great DIYpsi indie art fair! this was the first time the show was at corner for a summer show, and they expanded it outside to the back beer garden where they had had feral foods CSA selling produce and folks doing henna tattoos. they also shut down norris street to fit in a 2nd beer garden, food vendors, a stage for live music, couches, and more artists!

DIYpsi was dang argyle's first show for 2014. this was also my first summer show in three years and i nearly forgot how much fun they are! i had a blast with my amazing fellow vendors, and enjoyed vegan brats, vegan ice cream and a few hard ciders. thank you so much to everyone who came out to the show, and thanks to all things grow, tin angry men, and the library lab for organizing a great show!

new summer things

i can't believe it's already august! this means DIYpsi indie art fair is coming up in just ONE WEEK! the dang sweatshop has been working overtime sewing up new lovelies for this summer show. i've been enjoying using some of these japanese fabrics. it's been a few years since i've done a summer show, so i'm happy to be back in the game. this show is going to be such a fun time!

making terrariums with twig

last weekend i had the pleasure of attending a terrarium building workshop with the awesome ladies of twig terrariums, straight out of brooklyn, NY. they hosted a free workshop at the ann arbor district library, and of course i had to go. it was great! the ladies gave a little history on terrariums and showed us how to build our own. i used three different types of moss and gave it a hill effect. with our supplies came a teeny tiny figure to sit inside the terrarium. i received a tiny little man in a white suit. is it david byrne? perhaps. or it might just be a guy named steve saying "hey baby."

sewing machine hysteria

on a recent trip to chicago i happened upon some sewing machines in the window of allsaints, a clothing store. i marvelled. then walked past the door and saw this GIANT wall of sewing machines in the entrance-way to the shop. holy moly! it was a sight to see. i LOVE it when i happen upon such magical things without looking.

book it: biblio craft

BIBLIO craft is a great new book with great ideas inspired by one of my favorite places... the library! this book is a modern crafter's guide to using library resources to jumpstart creative projects.

the book starts out with basic with information about libraries - including card catalogs, call numbers, subject areas, and ephemera. it also gives resources on how to get connected with your local library in order to take advantage of all it has to offer. the book is amazing before the project instructions even begin! the projects featured involve many areas of craft and are by some well known crafters and designers.

in addition to checking out this book, i HIGHLY recommend checking out the craft books at your local library. you'd be surprised at all the magic you'll find! sometimes you want to check out a book to see the design before you actually purchase it, and libraries are a great way to do that. and you never know, you might just happen upon a great cookbook on the way to the craft book section!

wooly woods crafting with anna hrachovec

wooly woods is a beautiful installation by anna hrachovec in berlin last year. her knitted characters and yarn wrapped sticks are so beautiful! i've been super into wrapping sticks lately (thanks to craft-a-way camp), so i was elated to happen upon this work. i'm familiar with her work thanks to her cute and tiny mochimochi land knit creations and the great how-to books by hrachovec on how to make them.
i'm also excited that she is coming from chicago to teach a workshop on tiny creatures and stick wrapping at the ann arbor district library on july 12! yes, that's right, a free workshop from a stellar maker.

just look how amazing those sticks are! [swoon] i'd love a room adorned with such sweetness and color.

2nd annual craft-a-way camp!

last weekend was another fabulous weekend at craft camp! it was the 2nd annual craft-a-way camp, held at the waterloo recereation area, and lovingly hosted by the wonderful amy and ethan cronkite of small craft. these two had the vision of creating a crafty camper space in the beautiful michigan outdoors, and it all came together in perfect magicness last year. could it be repeated? reproduced? well, it pretty much was. it was a weekend of crafting, laughing, hiking, and shenanigans -- totally amazing! i had a blast hanging out with some of my favorite crafty friends and meeting new ones. i can't wait for the next one!

the weekend was chock full of a variety of hands-on workshops taught by area crafters.
  • michigan trees hike lead by andy sell of the foraging florist. we went on a walk through the surrounding areas taking note of the variety of plant and tree species in the area, focusing on identification. andy excels at this! i'm so glad he is a part of this because i don't know who else could do such a bang up job!
  • printing with plant pigments lead by andy sell of the foraging florist. we used flowers and leaves to create pigment prints by pounding the flowers onto watercolor paper. we had such great results!
  • fun with image transfer lead by karen lepage of one girl circus, etc. we did two methods that transferred laser photocopied photographs. one involved using packing tape creating transfers to be applied later. the other involved using gel medium to transfer images onto wood coasters.
  • camper tote screen printing lead by karen lepage of one girl circus, etc. (big nod to marcy davy who set up the workshop but couldn't attend!) we screen printed the craft-a-way camp logo onto linen bags.
  • dear diary lead by amy cronkite. we used a variety of paper to create a bound journal, complete with washi tape and stamped letters.
  • dream on lead by amy cronkite. we used vintage doilies, yarn and embroidery hoops to make the prettiest dream catchers you've ever seen. i've been having the weirdest dreams since hanging it over my bed...
  • no tee left behind lead by val willer of make-out goods. we ripped old t-shirts into strips and made necklaces, bracelets and scarves.
  • tie or dye lead by ethan cronkite. after an in-depth and fabulous introduction of the history of tie-dye by ethan, we tie-dyed our own shirts in a variety of patterns.
and if that wasn't enough crafting... we wrapped and painted sticks during downtime. pretty much all the time. it's addicting -- i wrapped so many sticks! and once home i turned them into a lovely vase arrangement.

there was a vegan potluck, crafty craft cocktails, a campfire sing-a-long, sparklers, s'mores making, a thunderstorm, many mosquitoes, a smelly vault toilet, excellent swag, and SO MUCH crafting and laughing.
introductions after arrival. i taught the group the BOOM CHICKA BOOM chant often heard at camps.

andy leading our nature walk and being his all-around fabulous self.

if i had a hammer, i'd hammer in the evening.
i'd hammer on flowers! all over this land!
the scrunchy face is because it is very loud when you have 20 people beating up flowers.

working hard on image transfers under our MEGA craft tent(s).

there was a brief storm, so we moved the dream catchers workshop indoors to one of our giant triple bunk cabins.

see, i told you they were beautiful. can you guess which one is mine?

in craft-a-way camp tradition... stephanie brought instruments and her guitar to help guide us through our sing-a-long around the campfire.

ethan made a guide with a few songs, including yellow submarine and this is how we do it. it was amazingly fun and funny. i like how random 90s jams are camp tradition now.

after singing and s'mores, andy busted out the sparklers! imagine 20 adults running around dancing and spelling with sparklers. YEP. i was instantly 7yrs old again.

on day 2 we had a ton more fun in our workshops. here karen is leading our screen printing workshop.

while sticks got wrapped with yarn, our tasty beverages got wrapped in the COOLEST beer cozy!
(happy to report, that while we crafted our hearts away, no one puked.)

and of course on the final day we got a group photo. here we are minus 5 folks who had already left.

it's a few days later and i'm STILL thinking fondly of camp, but not missing those vault toilets. thank heaven for incense!

i send giant thanks and hugs to amy and ethan and their giant crafty community loving hearts.

* all photos are by amy cronkite, except the beer cozy photo
