vegan cheeze sauce

here is a delicious non-processed, non-dairy vegan cheeze dip that is wonderful! it wows both vegans and carnivores. it's warm, ooey, gooey and delicious on nachos! i've been making it for nearly a decade, but i'm placing the recipe here in case i ever misplace it. (not that i don't have it memorized or anything!)

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup raw cashews (soaked for at least an hour, or overnight)
  • 1 cup nutritional yeast
  • 4 oz. jar of pimentos
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1  1/2 tsp salt
  1. place all ingredients in blender and mix on high until completely smooth.
  2. pour into saucepan. heat over medium heat while stirring or whisking continuously for 5-10 or until cheeze is thickened to desired consistency.
  3. enjoy!

a foolish weekend

for the past ten years the first weekend in april has been festifools weekend in ann arbor, featuring a sunday "parade" of foolishness featuring large papier mache puppets made by students and the community. i absolutely LOVE this event and have been involved for the past eight years. shortly after the birth of festifools the creators brought us a second event: foolmoon, an evening celebration of foolishness with processionals of glowing luminaries that ends at a giant street dance party. this year both events featured no precipitation to soggy up papier mache puppets and luminaries and the crowds that came out celebrated this fact! i love that these events invite the community to be creative and make whatever they want to bring to the events, whether it's costumes, puppets, dancing, bubbles, or music! i am all about trying to get adults to step into the silly zone.

more mo willems!

i accidentally stumbled upon the fact that a mo willems art exhibit opened the week before i arrived in new york. hello magic! of course i finagled our plans and convinced the crew to go. and with three kids in said crew, it was easy! the new york historical society museum and library was darling. it had the bat mobile, new york history stuff, a really cute children's area with interactive exhibits AND a super sweet little library with many books for kids to read. but the meat of it for me was MO WILLEMS! a serious favorite picture book author. pigeon, anyone?! and don't even get me started on elephant and piggie! i was mesmerized by the exhibit and dropped a wad in the gift shop. i'm so happy i found out it was there when i was! you know, just doing research for my job...
the bus! the pigeon drives as folks read.
mounds of mo books to read inside the bus!
i had to read a pigeon book.
the bus AND the hot dog? love this.
bonus: this museum is right near cafe frida, which is one of our faves and they have amazing sangria, margaritas, guacamole and everything! highly recommend.
